Xtream, M3U or MAG portal: choosing what to give your app
Three delivery formats, the same subscription behind all of them. A practical comparison of what each one gives you and where each one falls short.
They are formats, not tiers#
The first thing to be clear about is that none of these gives you more channels than another. The subscription is identical. What differs is how the player is told about it and how much the player can work out for itself afterwards.
That means switching between them costs nothing and breaks nothing. If a device is being awkward with one, trying another is a reasonable diagnostic step rather than a commitment.
Xtream Codes, and why to prefer it#
Xtream gives the player three pieces of information: a server address, a username and a password. From those the player queries the server directly and builds its own menus, categories, programme guide and on-demand sections.
This is the option to choose wherever it is offered. Because the player asks the server for what it needs, the channel list stays current without you doing anything, and the programme guide comes through as a matter of course. Nearly every serious player supports it.
M3U, and when it is the right answer#
An M3U link is one long URL containing everything: every channel and every stream address, in a single flat file. The player downloads it and displays what it finds.
Use it when the player only accepts a playlist, which covers VLC, a number of television apps and most improvised setups. The trade-offs are that the guide is often missing or has to be added separately, and that a very large playlist can be slow to load on weak hardware. As a test tool it is excellent, because a link that plays in VLC proves the line is healthy.
MAG portals, and why they are different#
MAG boxes do not use a username and password at all. The box identifies itself to the portal by its hardware MAC address, and the portal decides what it is entitled to. You give us the MAC, we bind it to the subscription, and the box finds everything on its own.
The upside is that setup is minimal and nothing has to be typed by an ordinary user. The downsides are worth understanding. The line is tied to one specific box, so replacing the hardware means telling us the new address, and there is no password to change if the portal URL ends up somewhere it should not be.
A short decision rule#
If the player offers Xtream, use Xtream. If it only takes a playlist, use M3U. If the device is a MAG or a Formuler running the portal interface, use the portal, because it is the only thing that hardware understands.
When a device is misbehaving and you have exhausted the obvious, swapping format is a cheap experiment. A channel list that loads over M3U but not over Xtream tells us something specific about where the problem sits.
Keep them to yourself#
All three formats carry your entitlement in plain form. An M3U link, in particular, is the whole subscription in a single string, and anyone who has it can use it until it is changed.
Do not post them in forums or group chats when asking for help, including screenshots that show them. If one has already gone out, message us and we will issue replacements.
