Getting a steady picture out of an ordinary home network

What actually determines whether a stream holds together, in the order it matters, and the cheap changes that make a real difference.

Why the speed test misleads you#

A speed test measures the best case: one large transfer, to a nearby server, for a few seconds. Streaming asks for something quite different, which is a moderate amount of data arriving without interruption for hours at a stretch.

A line that peaks at 200 Mbps and drops packets every half minute will stutter. A line that holds 20 Mbps without faltering will not. This is why customers with fast connections and constant buffering are so often told, correctly, that their speed is not the issue.

What each stream actually needs#

Roughly 5 to 8 Mbps for standard definition, 10 to 15 for HD, and 25 or more for 4K. Those are per simultaneous stream, so a house running two televisions and a tablet needs the sum of all three at the same time.

Add headroom on top. A connection sized exactly to the requirement has nothing left when a phone decides to back up its photos, and that is the moment the picture stops.

Wireless is where most of it goes wrong#

The 2.4 GHz band reaches further and is heavily congested. The 5 GHz band is cleaner and faster but does not travel well through walls. Most streaming problems in a flat are 2.4 GHz congestion, and most in a large house are a 5 GHz device that is simply too far from the router.

Move the device to 5 GHz if it is close enough to the router. If it is not, an access point nearer the television beats trying to push a signal through two brick walls. Mesh systems help, though a mesh node linked back to the router over wireless still spends capacity on that hop.

The cable that solves it#

Wherever a cable is possible, use one. A wired connection removes interference, distance and contention in a single step, and it is the change that most reliably ends a buffering complaint for good.

Where running a cable is impractical, powerline adapters send the signal through the mains wiring. They are inconsistent between houses, depending on how the circuits are laid out, but when they work they are far better than marginal wireless, and they cost less than a router upgrade.

The router matters less than its position#

Routers supplied by providers are adequate for a household of ordinary use. Before spending money on a new one, move the existing one. Out of a cupboard, off the floor, away from the microwave and roughly central in the house is worth more than most upgrades.

If the router is genuinely old, the thing to look for is not maximum speed but how many simultaneous devices it handles without its performance collapsing. That figure is what a busy household actually depends on.

Find the quiet competition#

Cloud photo backup, game console updates, security cameras uploading continuously and somebody on a video call all take from the same connection, and none of them announce themselves.

Uploads deserve particular attention. Filling the upstream direction delays the acknowledgements that keep downloads flowing, so a backup can break a stream while the download figure still looks healthy. Most routers can prioritise or limit specific devices, and most consoles can be told to update overnight.

Where a VPN helps and where it does not#

A VPN helps in exactly one situation: your provider is slowing sustained video traffic, and the signature is a picture that is fine in the afternoon and unwatchable at nine. Encrypting the traffic stops it being singled out.

It does not help with congested wireless, an overloaded streaming stick or a connection that is simply too small, and in those cases it makes things slightly worse by adding a hop. Test for one evening before committing to a subscription.

In priority order#

Use a cable where you can. Use 5 GHz where you cannot. Move the router before replacing it. Find the background uploads. Give each simultaneous stream its own headroom. Test a VPN only if the problem follows the clock.

Work down that list and the great majority of home streaming problems are gone before you reach the bottom of it, without anybody selling you a faster package.
