Setting up on Windows PC and laptop
Useful for testing more than for watching. When you need to prove whether a fault is the subscription or the television, a laptop settles it in two minutes.
- Windows 10 or 11
- Your Xtream details or M3U link
- Permission to run an unsigned installer, or VLC as an alternative
The steps
Download the desktop player#1
Take the Windows file from the Downloads page and open it. A blue SmartScreen panel usually appears first, saying the publisher is not recognised. That message is about code signing certificates rather than about the file itself, and small players almost never buy one. Click More info, then Run anyway if you are content to carry on.
Or use VLC instead#2
If you would rather not install anything new, VLC opens an M3U link on its own. Choose Media, then Open Network Stream, and paste your playlist URL. There are no menus and no programme guide, but it plays, and for a diagnostic that is all you need.
Sign in#3
In the desktop player, add a profile using the Xtream option and enter your server address, username and password. On a laptop you can paste these directly from the account page, which removes typing mistakes from the list of possible causes entirely.
Use it as your reference#4
A stream that plays cleanly on the laptop while stuttering on the television proves the subscription is fine and moves the search to the television, its app or the link between it and the router. Note that result before you contact us, because it is the single most useful thing you can tell us.
- Plug the laptop into Ethernet for the test. Comparing a wireless television against a wireless laptop tells you very little.
- If VLC plays the channel but the desktop player will not, the player has cached a stale list. Remove the profile and add it again.
- Windows power plans on laptops throttle the network adapter on battery. Run the test on mains power if you want the result to mean anything.
Open the same login on a phone using mobile data. Playback there means the subscription is healthy and the problem is this device or your network, which is exactly the sentence to put in a message to support along with your order number.
Reading this before you have a subscription?
That is the sensible order. The steps above are the whole of what setup involves on this device, so you can judge in advance whether the hardware you own will cope. Activation itself is automatic and takes about two minutes.
